Odisha CM Naveen announces big plans for Koraput coffee ahead of Panchayat polls

As the state heads towards the much-anticipated Panchayat elections next year, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday announced the expansion of coffee plantations in the district.

As per the announcement, the state government aims to expand the area of coffee plantations by 5,000 hectares over the next five years, which will boost the economy of the relatively backward district of Koraput,

The big statement came during a state-sponsored program where Patnaik distributed Biju Swasthya Kalyan smart health cards to beneficiaries in the district via virtual mode.

“Koraput Coffee entered the market as a new brand. He brought new opportunities for the tribals in the district. I am happy to announce it because it will pave the way for the economic development of Koraput, ”Patnaik said.

Apart from this, Patnaik also inaugurated several development projects worth Rs 1000 Cr during the virtual meeting.

On October 1, the Chief Minister launched a dedicated e-commerce platform to improve the incomes of the state’s coffee farmers on International Coffee Day. The CM also announced the establishment of two points of sale in the state.

In launching the website, Patnaik praised the coffee growers in the tribal areas and said that the coffee grown in Koraput is of high quality and can become a famous brand in the country as well as abroad.

It is relevant to mention that the cultivation of coffee transforms life in the tribal hinterland of the district. Koraput, being located at a height of 3,000 feet above sea level, is ideal for growing coffee due to its cool climate and rainfall. This locally grown coffee is a 100% Arabica single origin coffee that will compete with the specialty coffee market in the near future.
