Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that inflation rose in 10 of the 12 categories that feed into the index, with only communication and education registering no increase.
Food prices rose as global supply chain disruption and inflationary pressures began to trickle down to supermarket shelves, with prices rising for a range of staples.
This comes on top of already strong increases in oil and energy prices, which have hit household finances hard.
But the ONS said the UK was ‘not alone’ in seeing soaring costs, with Britain’s CPI measure broadly in line with that seen in Europe, while it rose even more rapidly in America – reaching 8.1% in December.

The ONS said: “Many of the current drivers of this inflation are common to all countries, with energy and fuel prices subject to global market conditions and the US and UK experiencing strong upward pressure on used car prices.”
A detailed look at ONS data shows that among the fastest growing food prices, lamb continues to top the list, with an annual Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation of 12.4 % last month.
Fresh milk prices also rose by 10.1%, with eggs up 7.4%, while processed vegetables and jams and sugar recorded increases of 13% and 12.4% respectively. .
A blow for caffeine lovers, coffee and other hot drinks saw their prices increase by 11.5%, while the price of tea increased by 2.8%.
There have also been strong increases for mineral waters, soft drinks and juices, according to the ONS.
Clothing and footwear was another category that suffered runaway inflation, with a record 8.9% rise on the CPI measure, and some of the biggest increases seen in women’s clothing, particularly pants, dresses, short-sleeved tops and blouses, skirts, jeans and sweaters. .
Women’s outerwear rose 27.7% on the RPI measure, according to the ONS.
The ONS said clothing prices normally rise between January and February as new stock begins to hit stores after the New Year sales period, but prices fell 1.5% a year earlier , with trading affected by the Covid shutdowns.
Families were also affected by higher prices for toys and games, including computer games and more traditional toys, with CPI prices across the category rising 4.2%.
Sports equipment saw its CPI prices jump 10.6%, while pet food and other related services were another source of cost pressure, with inflation rising 6.5%.
