Biggby Coffee, the fast-growing Michigan-based coffeehouse chain, has opened its first caf̩ in Crown Point Рand another may be coming soon.

Daniel Tirado-Barbauld, a 29-year-old Crown Point native who worked as a chef at Giovanni’s in Munster and Briar Ridge Country Club, decided to go into business. He originally hoped to open a food truck, but the coronavirus pandemic has put the brakes on that idea.

He started looking for coffee franchises and opened the first Biggby Coffee at 1601 E. 109th Ave. at Crown Point. Founded in East Lansing, Michigan, in 1995, Biggby Coffee now has more than 250 branches in 13 states, including stores in Michigan City and Chesterton.

“I watched Dunkin ‘(Donuts) and Starbucks and chose Biggby because I agree with what they believe,” he said. “Biggby stood out because they use 20% fair trade coffee and pay the farmers directly. They like people. By 2026, they plan to use 50% fair trade coffee. Much of the coffee is slave labor, but they take care of these farmers. . If you love the world, the world will love you back. “

Coffee is also premium, he said.

“It’s farm-to-shelf,” Tirado-Barbauld said. “It’s served within two weeks. Freshness is guaranteed. It’s fresher than some of the stuff you have in your fridge.”

The menu includes over 80 different lattes that can be served hot, iced or frozen. It also offers over 60 different teas and Bragel sandwiches for breakfast, brunch and lunch.

The Crown Point Biggby is located at a Citgo station on 109th Street, which is closed due to construction until November. It can accommodate 12 people and has a drive-thru service.

“We hope to serve the great city of Crown Point,” he said. “We’re for coffee fanatics. We’re on a mission. That’s why we’re the fastest growing coffeehouse chain in the country.”

Tirado-Barbauld said Biggby has a unique philosophy and approach to customer service.

“We are a happy and positive cafe,” he said. “Customers are not just a number. They are our livelihood. We are aggressively friendly and it shows. You can go anywhere for a cup of coffee, but we want you to come see us for it. ‘experience.”

Biggby Coffee is open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
