What happens in Leicester with the latest lockdown easing

Today marked another major milestone in Leicester’s long journey out of lockdown.

Stage 3 of the government’s ‘road map to get out of lockdown’ has come on time, and further easing of Covid-19 restrictions has resulted in the reopening of domestic hotels and many businesses re-negotiating for the first time in many months.

Friends and family were able to gather in larger numbers during the latest phase of lifting of restrictions as a dose of normalcy returns to a city that has been forced to undergo lockdown longer than anywhere else UK.

The relaxation of the coronavirus rules has been welcome – but with caution.

Covid-19 infection rates here, although on the decline, are still well above the national average and public health officials urge people to enjoy their new freedoms carefully and in a manner that the virus is the least likely to reappear.

The recently launched city council campaign “ We Miss You ” aims to achieve the safest unlocking possible.

City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “Leicester has a lot to offer, but unfortunately not all of us have been able to enjoy it in the past 14 months.

“This campaign is the first step to correct that.

“We are working with local businesses across town to make sure they can reopen security, and in a way that reassures customers and encourages them to take those first steps to rediscover the vast array of hospitality, entertainment and Leicester retail. ‘

LeicestershireLive reporters were across town reporting Leicester was unblocking further afield.
